I was really interested in addressing diversity and inclusion at Miami University due to being WOC who has attended diversity events such as the Bridges Program. I really wanted to explore Miami’s history of racist events, administrative responses, and understand it from an anthropological lens.

I'm invested in this project as a person within the LGBT community who faces discrimination for sexuality and gender but not race. My goal is to help educate Miami students who've not had to face racial bias or discrimination understand the actions that must be taken to prevent further harm in the future to our students of color.

As someone whose advocacy for immigrants' and subaltern rights informs her academic work, I believe public anthropology is the best way for students, intellectuals, and professors to have an impact on their communities. I believe fostering sympathy through sharing experiences is the first step to brining about chance, and that testimony, research, and ethnography are the best way to reveal the truth.

At the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement, I decided to educate myself about structural racism and subconscious biases. This inspired me to examine diversity and racism in my community at Miami University, with a specific focus on Greek Life.

The events of summer 2020 brought about a lot of personal attention, activism, and passion for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion have always been a hot topic in my community growing up, and Miami University is no exception. Equipped with anthropological frameworks, I’m excited to tackle important issues and challenge misconception in this MEAD Project.

This project is done in association with the Miami University Department of Anthropology and the 2021 Senior Seminar professor, Dr. Leighton C. Peterson
